Prácticas y comportamientos sexuales de los estudiantes de la Universidad de Costa Rica = Practices and sexual behaviors of students at the University of Costa Rica

Abstract

El estudio tuvo como objetivo identificar las prácticas sexuales de los estudiantes de la Universidad de Costa Rica para adquirir la infección por VIH, con el fin de promover una vida sexual sana y el mejoramiento de la calidad de vida. Se realizó una encuesta auto-administrada y anónima en la población estudiantil, durante el ciclo lectivo del año 2008 en las diferentes sedes que tiene la Universidad de Costa Rica en todo el país. Al final del trabajo de campo se logró recolectar un total de 497 cuestionarios. La distribución por sexo y edad representó en forma adecuada a la población estudiantil de la Universidad de Costa Rica donde no se dan grandes diferencias. La mayoría de los estudiantes son del área de Ciencias Sociales. El 86% de los estudiantes indicó haber tenido relaciones sexuales y el promedio de edad de inicio de las relaciones sexuales en ambos sexos, fue de 18 años. Un mayor porcentaje de las mujeres (43%) respecto a los hombres (38,7%) tuvieron la última relación sexual en menos de una semana. La monogamia y el uso de preservativo fueron considerados por la mayoría de los estudiantes como prácticas de sexo seguro. Al consultar a los encuestados donde habían recibido charlas, cursos sobre sexualidad o educación sexual, el sistema educativo fue la principal fuente de información sobre el tema. Esta información lleva a formular una serie de recomendaciones como la necesidad de ejecutar jornadas informativas para los estudiantes en especial las mujeres a través de los medios de comunicación de la Universidad de Costa Rica. The study aimed to identify the sexual practices of the Costa Rican students to acquire the infection by HIV with the purpose of promoting a sexual life and the improvement of the quality of life. An anonymous survey was conducted in the student population, during the school year of 2008 in the different venues with the nationwide University of Costa Rica . At the end of the field work, it was managed to collect a total of 497 questionnaires. The distribution by sex and age represented in suitable form the student population of the University of Costa Rica where great differences by sex do not occur. The 86% of the students indicated to have been sexual relations and the average of age of beginning of the sexual was18 in both sex. A higher percentage of women (43%) with respect to men (38,7%) have been the last sex in less than a week. Monogamy and condom use are considered by most of the students as safe sex. When consulting to the students where they had received information on sexuality or sexual education, the educative system was the main source on the subject. This information takes to us to formulate a series of recommendations like the necessity to execute informative days for the students especially women through the media of the University of Costa Rica.
